About

eBirders Portugal lets you easily find out what birds have been seen across the country, including Madeira and Açores. The site uses the eBird API to fetch all the checklists submitted to eBird.org and let you easily browse all the observations.

The main 'News' page presents:

  • The highest count for each species seen.
  • The species that have been added to the list for the current year.
  • The checklists which recorded the highest number of species.
  • The birders who saw the most species in a day.
  • The birders who submitted the largest number of checklists.
  • The birders who spent the most time out in the field.

The page initially shows you the news for the past 7 days for the entire country, however you can easily see the news for any part of the country, or from earlier weeks or months.

In addition to the Year List, the Species page shows you the complete list of species seen, either at the national level or, like the news pages, for any part of the country. You can also see the species seen for any location(s) or by any birder.

The remaining pages let you browse the checklist submitted to eBird or the complete set of observations. As with the other pages, you can select, any part of the country, any set of locations, any range of dates, or any observer. That way you can easily find out if the Water Pipit you saw at the salinas in Castro Marim is a regular observation or something unusual.

The goal of eBirders Portugal is convenience. You can find the same information on eBird.org but the pages are not always organised with birders in mind. As a result you often have to spend a lot of time, and click on a lot of links, to find the same information. In some cases that is simply not possible, or at least not easily. The News service, or the ability to show checklists and observations from more than one location is unique to eBirders Portugal. These are extremely useful for finding what has been seen in an area, for example around the rice fields near Vila Franca da Xira / Parque Natural do Estuário do Tejo, or the migrant hotspots around Sagres.

eBirders Portugal is in a friendly competition with eBird. By creating the site we want to see eBird.org create more "birder-friendly" pages. That way we can spend less time building web sites, and more time out birding.

3. Finally, and most importantly, go birding. More birds seen, is a win-win for everybody.
