What's New
A list of what has changed on this site, whether it is new features, editorial decisions on observations, or just general news.
Recent changes - July 2025
2nd Jul 2025July 2nd: When viewing checklists, observations, or species, you can now select more than one district, county, location. That makes it easy to find out what has been seen in a region or area. For example, find all the checklists submitted for:
- Terras de Trás-os-Montes
- PN Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina
- Lezíria Grande de Vila Franca de Xira
July 4th: Added more fields to the filter panels for Observations and Species. You can now search for Observations using either the common name, scientific name or family. For example, that makes it easy to find observations for Phylloscopus warblers, or Falcons. Similarly, on the Species page you can also filter the list to show only species in a given family.
July 5th: Tidied up the pages when viewing the site with a mobile phone. July 6th: Added a splash of colour.
Recent changes - June 2025
26th Jun 2025- The Species Total at the top of the News pages now excludes sub-species, forms, etc.
- Added a field to the species page so you can show species, subspecies, domestic species or hybrids.
- Added filters for updating new observations. The first set of filters will change species such as Helmeted Guineafowl to the domestic form so the species lists show only species that occur naturally.
- Updated the pages to use the space more efficiently, and easier to read on tablets and mobile phones.
- Observations where there are doubts over the identification will simply be flagged. The job of reviewing and approving or rejecting the record will be left to the moderators at eBird.
Flagged Observations - June 2025
14th Jun 2025The report of a Little Bittern from Vale de Siléncio, Olivais, Lisboa was flagged. Nothing is impossible, but there is no information on size in the comments so Black-crowned Night-heron cannot be ruled out.
The report of a Penduline Tit in Olivais, Lisbon on 31st May was flagged. The bird is more likely to be a Coal Tit with leucistic plumage.
The Bannerman's Shearwater (Puffinus bannermani) reported from Madeira was flagged. This is a species from islands in the Pacific Ocean, south of Japan. While occurrence in the North Atlantic is not impossible, e.g. Swinhoe's Storm-petrel, the plumage variation in small, black and white shearwaters is enormous, and more evidence is needed for the report to be considered valid.
All records of the following species: Swan Goose, Helmeted Guineafowl, Indian Peafowl, Red Junglefowl, Muscovy Duck, and Cockatiel were changed to the domestic form.
The record of Green Peafowl, from the Botanic Gardens in Lisboa was changed to Indian Peafowl. This was the only record of Green Peafowl from this site, whilte there are 7 records of Indian Peafowl. It seems likely that the species was entered incorrectly.
Observations of Greylag Goose, particularly from urban parks, were also changed to the "Domestic" form.
